How to review an automatic mileage log
A short review routine helps catch missing drives, incorrect categories and vague purposes before you export a mileage report.
Start with completeness
Automatic tracking saves entry time, but a route list still needs your review. Compare the day’s recorded drives with your appointments and the journeys you remember. Look for a missing return journey, an unexpected long gap or a drive that was actually several stops.
Check tracking health when something is missing. iPhone location and motion permissions, settings and signal can affect detection. No automatic tracker can promise to record every drive.
Separate recorded and estimated journeys
Tallymile can surface possible missed drives from motion history. Confirm them against what you actually did. Recovered journeys are labelled estimated in the app and reports; an estimated route should not be presented as a precisely recorded GPS journey.
Correct times, places and distance on the phone when you have a reliable basis. Merge or split records where appropriate, then check the resulting entries. Keep a note of uncertainty instead of filling gaps with invented precision.
Review purpose before accepting a category
Use the business or personal swipe as a classification step, then add a purpose that you will understand later. A useful fictional note is “visit to client workshop about repair estimate”; “work” tells you much less.
Recurring rules and gig-shift tags make the queue easier to process. Still review their suggestions and the journeys included in each shift. An app label is your record, not a determination that a journey qualifies for a particular tax treatment.
Export and inspect a representative period
Before sharing a report, inspect dates, places, distances and purposes. Open the exported PDF or CSV and check a known trip, a corrected trip and any estimated entries. Choose the period you actually need.
In Tallymile, current-month reports and exports are free; Pro adds reports for any period and the year-end summary. A raw CSV of all drives remains available for portability. Keep your own copy and confirm reporting requirements with the recipient. This workflow organises records and does not provide tax advice.
